Nothing compares to the feeling when you first push through the swell – when the salt wash envelops you and you push down into the clear blue. There, hidden by the water horizon, diving can feel like you are the only person alive, a solitary explorer in a rich, blue world.

But then, all too often, there is plastic. Our oceans are full of a trillion pieces of it, including fishing flotsam on the beach, carrier bags in the water, and the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

We all have a responsibility to be activists in our own, varying ways. Here at DeeperBlue, we can’t stop the trawlers and fishing boats that are responsible for the majority of the large plastic waste in our oceans (the equivalent of 55,000 double-deckers buses a year), but we can help change the impacts of the clothing industry, which is slowly waking up to the damage it causes.

For every line of organic clothing or sustainable t shirts, there are still fast fashion factories churning out plastic-dense products onto the market, destined to be left to waste away somewhere – but it doesn’t have to be like that.

The DeeperBlue Community T-Shirt

Plastic Wardrobes, Plastic Oceans

Synthetic fibers, like polyester and nylon, now make up about 60% of all clothing, and these fibers are washed off and away and into the water system every time they are washed. This runoff makes up to 35% of the plastic in our oceans, a constant stream of infinitesimally small pollution.

Organic clothing is the opportunity to remove all of this plastic from the supply chain and lifecycle of the product, leading to less waste during the manufacturing process and less runoff when you wash your clothes, meaning that they won’t lie in landfill sites for decades, constantly molting microplastics. For us, it makes no sense to wear or design dive tee shirts that are thick with plastic, resulting in something that’s supposed to show your love for the water but pollutes it at the same time.

DeeperBlue Community Women's Top

From Sustainable T-Shirts to the Whole Ocean

Thinking and creating in this way, you get a glimpse of the interconnectedness of our problems. This is not just about what is in the ocean, but what is around it as well – it is about the animals being tested for synthetic clothes, the fossil fuels used to power the factories, and people’s working conditions. In one line of sustainable t shirts, you can see how it is all threaded and stitched together.

Sea Print T-Shirt

A Swell of Small Decisions

This can all make for pretty somber reading, but there are several solutions. While some are obvious, others are less so. To completely solve the issue, we will need large-scale, global action, but one part of what every person and business can do is try to only purchase and consume with an awareness of the impacts of that choice.

The ocean isn’t that whole separate world it feels like when you’re first diving down into it – its health is linked to everyday actions. This is why we like to view the things we make as part of a greater whole, not just as shorts and scuba diving t shirts but as small statements about what we value and the world we want to help create.

You can find our full collection of organic, sustainable t shirts at deeperblue.com/clothing

Since its inception in 1996, DeeperBlue has been more than just a platform for freedivers, scuba divers, and ocean advocates.
